Partnership between the Southern African Wildlife College and Commonland  focuses on addressing the urgent need for holistic landscape restoration in Southern Africa

The College and Commonland have joined forces in a new partnership aimed at scaling long-term, community-led conservation and restoration efforts across Southern Africa. By combining the SAWC’s expertise in community-led conservation and restoration training with Commonland’s 4 Returns Framework, this partnership will develop and implement training programmes and materials to help guide holistic landscape management and restoration tailored to local needs and insights. Through the cooperation between key stakeholders and enabling partners, this partnership aims to accelerate holistic landscape restoration from the ground up.

A partnership based on a shared vision for thriving communities and ecosystems

Challenges in Southern Africa include land degradation and socio economic pressures.

Southern Africa faces increasing challenges from land degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change and socio-economic pressures in rural communities living in the buffer zones of protected areas. Both the SAWC and Commonland recognise the urgent need for community-led, long-term landscape restoration that focuses on restoring ecosystems while empowering communities to thrive.

This partnership will focus on providing contextualised training and capacity-strengthening opportunities for conversation and restoration initiatives, local communities and conservation leaders. Activities will range from short learning programmes to advocacy, knowledge-sharing, and practical restoration initiatives across the region. Commonland and SAWC’s joint activities will be rooted in the shared values of inclusivity, collaboration, and a commitment to resilient ecosystems and communities.

Restoring Our Landscapes – A Short Learning Programme

Members of the Makuleke Community take part in the first Short Learning Programme piloted by the SAWC and Commonland.

A cornerstone of this partnership is the “Restoring our Landscapes” Short Learning Programme (SLP), piloted in October 2024 with the Makuleke community in Limpopo, South Africa. This programme incorporates Commonland’s 4 Returns Framework, adapted by the SAWC to meet the unique needs of local communities. It equips participants with practical tools and knowledge to take a holistic approach to restoration while inspiring stewardship, and promoting ecological, social, and economic resilience.

In addition to the SLP, the SAWC has integrated the 4 Returns Framework into its newly accredited three-year Applied Natural Resource Management diploma. This addition ensures that future conservation leaders are equipped with the knowledge and skills to tackle the region’s restoration challenges through holistic and innovative initiatives.

Driving Change Together

This partnership marks a significant step toward scaling training programmes that advance community-led conservation and restoration efforts across Southern Africa and beyond. From short learning programmes to knowledge-sharing, advocacy, and capacity-building, the SAWC and Commonland are committed to creating a future where restored ecosystems support vibrant, sustainable communities.
