Junior Leaders: Growing Skills, Confidence, Purpose, and Inspiring Young Minds to Lead with Integrity

At the College, leadership is not reserved for those at the top – it is nurtured at every level. Now in its third year, the Junior Leaders Programme has become a catalyst for innovation and internal transformation, answering an important question: how can junior staff shape the future of the College today?

What began in 2023 with five motivated junior staff members has grown into a dynamic group of six, each leading a self-initiated project to address key campus needs. These include the Xitsonga ICT Training initiative, bridging digital and language divides; the Know Your College initiative, strengthening staff understanding of institutional functions; and the Healthy Living programme, which promotes wellbeing through regular campus activities.

Additional projects focus on improving feedback through QR codes, strengthening internal communication for staff without regular computer access, and fostering stronger interdepartmental collaboration. Together, these initiatives are breaking down silos, promoting inclusion, and building a more connected College community.

As the year draws to a close, the SAWC Junior Leaders have taken an exciting step forward by enrolling in an Online Leadership Course, commencing next year and running over twelve months. This marks a significant investment in their personal growth, confidence, and leadership potential. Through the course, they will develop skills in communication, decision-making, teamwork, and responsible leadership, preparing them for a more effective role within the College and beyond. Here our thanks are extended to the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation for making this and other leadership interventions, at all levels, possible, and which in turn also supports the College’s equity and succession planning.

To celebrate the Junior Leaders’ commitment and the successful conclusion of the year, the group enjoyed a memorable year-end function. Highlights included a scenic game drive, allowing the Junior Leaders to reconnect with nature and witness conservation in action, followed by a magical bush dinner under the stars filled with reflection, laughter, and a strong sense of togetherness.

We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as the next generation of leaders.Â
