Update from the ICT Department – Dec ’24

By Karl Ferreira – Chief ICT Manager

As we conclude another year, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department congratulates the long-term students. The NQF Level 5 and Level 6 year-long courses successfully completed their final exams, with graduates celebrating their achievements on 28 November 2024. Reflecting on the year’s journey, the ICT department takes pride in contributing to the students’ academic experience.

At the beginning of the year, ICT introduced automated internal processes, enabling students to register for courses through a digital form that streamlined data handling. This innovation supported the Student Administration and Programme Support Department in efficiently assigning student numbers and managing other administrative tasks.

The ICT department addressed significant connectivity challenges in the second quarter through the “ICT Backbone Infrastructure Upgrade” project. This ambitious initiative involved replacing or reconfiguring existing equipment and network structures, dramatically enhancing the campus’s connectivity. By May 2024, 95% of the campus buildings had internet access, with stable Wi-Fi available in accommodations, public areas, and the kitchen/bush pub zones. Students and staff could roam freely across the campus without worrying about disconnections. We warmly received their appreciation for these upgrades.

Throughout the year, ICT support team members Collen Mkansi and Tebogo Malapane were always on call to assist students during computer-based learning sessions and online examinations, ensuring seamless user experiences. The department also developed QR-code-enabled digital feedback forms, simplifying processes for students to provide input on courses, food, accommodation, and more.

As the year closes, the ICT department proudly reflects on the student’s accomplishments and the role it played in supporting their journey. While not directly involved in knowledge transfer, ICT takes pride in contributing to shaping the future leaders of our natural world. May the skills gained at the SAWC guide these graduates toward brighter futures.
