Junior Leaders Driving Impact through Innovation and Collaboration

Written by: The SAWC Junior Leaders

At the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC), leadership is not merely a title; it is defined by action, collaboration, and measurable impact. Recently, our Junior Leaders have demonstrated this ethos in abundance, rolling out a series of strategic initiatives that actively strengthen our College community from the ground up.

Streamlining Focus for Greater Impact

To ensure their efforts yield tangible results, the Junior Leaders recently restructured six existing projects into three highly focused, core initiatives:

  • ICT Xitsonga Training and QR Code Project, led by Tebogo Malapane and Amelia Makhubela, promotes digital empowerment and inclusivity. Through ICT Xitsonga training and the integration of QR codes across key campus areas, the initiative provides easier access to College information while celebrating language and cultural representation.
  • Healthy Living Project, led by Goodwill Seepane, promotes wellness through physical activity initiatives, balanced nutrition awareness, mental well-being conversations, and health campaigns. The project reinforces the understanding that a healthy community is fundamental to organisational success.
  • Improved Communication Project, led by Michael Machavi, Malwandla Ngomane, and Justine Maluleke, focuses on strengthening internal communication channels, improving clarity in messaging, and encouraging constructive feedback across the College.

Bridging the Digital Divide

As part of their commitment to improving College-wide operational efficiency, the Junior Leaders successfully secured eight iPads for staff use. After formally presenting the initiative to the Management Committee (MANCOM) and the Interdepartmental Committee, the devices will be strategically installed in key operational areas, including Maintenance, Reception, the Dining Hall, the K9 Unit, and Protected Area Integrity (PAI) offices.

With staff training already underway, this initiative is expected to enhance staff engagement, improve response times, and strengthen the College’s commitment to service excellence by providing easier access to the College’s intranet, policies, leave systems, and guest feedback platforms.

Forging a Resilient, Connected Community

Leadership is equally about fostering unity, aligning goals, and showing appreciation. On 29 January 2026, the Junior Leaders stepped up to facilitate a comprehensive induction session for the Community Committee. By confidently managing presentations and facilitating open dialogue, the team helped align expectations and establish clear channels for future collaboration between the College and community representatives.

This spirit of camaraderie was further proven during a week of relentless heavy rainfall at the beginning of the year. Despite severely challenging travel conditions, our dedicated support staff consistently reported for duty. In recognition of this remarkable resilience, the Junior Leaders—alongside CEO Theresa Sowry, and under the expert guidance of senior chefs Calvin Nyathi and Lineth Mnisi—organised and prepared a surprise pizza lunch. This hands-on initiative served as both a morale booster and a valuable team-building exercise, with the overwhelmingly positive response reaffirming the profound impact of meaningful recognition.

Finally, to ensure our newest intakes felt immediately at home—especially those who had travelled vast distances to study with us—the Junior Leaders helped host a vibrant staff-versus-students welcoming match of soccer and netball. The afternoon reinforced a vital message: the College is not just a place of rigorous learning, but a supportive home where students are valued and encouraged to thrive.
