BARSA Summit 2025: A Collaborative Conservation Effort
At the BARSA (Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa) Summit, Precious Malapane (Deputy Dog Master) and Bruce McDonald (Chief Pilot) delivered speeches on the collaborative role of the College’s K9 and Airwing Units in conservation operations to address poaching. Their presentations highlighted the importance of teamwork, where aerial and canine teams complement each other’s strengths in protecting Africa’s wildlife. This collaboration is vital in the ongoing conservation efforts to address poaching and habitat destruction. The highly anticipated summit also explored innovative approaches to shaping Africa’s aviation future.
Promotions and Other Highlights
The first quarter of 2025 also saw several notable internal promotions at the SAWC, further strengthening its operational capabilities. Simon Mnisi was promoted to Dog Master, and Precious Malapane to Deputy Dog Master, reflecting the College’s dedication to internal growth and leadership development.
Additionally, the College has welcomed a new K9 response officer/ trainer, Bonagele Mnisi, who transitioned from a volunteer to a professional role, contributing to the SAWC’s growing expertise in efforts to address poaching.
The College also hosts international volunteers eager to learn about conservation, such as Zoë Derks and Zindzhi Boetzkes from the Netherlands, who are currently assisting in the K9 Unit. They are gaining valuable insights into pack dog training while immersing themselves in South African conservation culture.
