Enhancing Efficiency and Accessibility: ICT Innovations at the SAWC
The Southern African Wildlife College’s (SAWC’s) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department continues to drive innovation, ensuring seamless operations and enhanced learning experiences for students and staff. Recent developments in the first quarter of 2025 have strengthened data collection, improved resource management, and increased operational efficiency, ultimately supporting the College’s mission of conservation education and training.
Student Data Collection
Streamlining student data collection, together with the Registrar’s office, has significantly improved the process of collecting and managing student data. By streamlining this process, the College can enhance student, donor and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) support services where students on the system can now be categorised as needed.
Optimising the Resource Centre
The College Resource Centre is crucial in supporting students and staff with research materials and academic resources. To enhance efficiency, the ICT Department has introduced new digital tools, including an online system for managing printing orders. The system is now running smoothly, and staff are gradually adapting to the new process. These advancements reflect the SAWC’s commitment to providing world-class conservation education.
New Leave System Launched
In collaboration with Payroll, the ICT department has launched an automated leave application system, simplifying the process for staff to request and manage leave. This initiative reduces administrative delays, enhances transparency, and improves operational efficiency, allowing SAWC personnel to focus on their core responsibilities in conservation training and research.
Improving Connectivity
Reliable internet connectivity is essential for the College’s research, training, and communication efforts. The ICT team has been actively working with service providers to address recent internet disruptions, ensuring stable and consistent access for students and staff. These efforts support remote learning, digital communication, and overall institutional efficiency.
Enhancing Internal Communication
To improve information sharing across the SAWC, the ICT department updates the College’s intranet with key dates for public events and training courses. Staff and students are encouraged to submit any relevant dates, such as student achievement awards, pass-out parades, and community engagement events, ensuring greater transparency and inclusivity in the College activities.
Xitsonga ICT Training
Recognising the importance of multilingual accessibility, the ICT Department has been conducting training sessions in Xitsonga, equipping staff with the digital skills necessary for effective communication and research in conservation.
The SAWC is committed to leveraging technology for conservation education. By enhancing operational efficiency and accessibility, the SAWC continues to provide an optimal learning environment.
