Natural Resource Management
I’m an employee in the Ministry of Tourism and Arts (MTA) under the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) Zambia based in Livingstone the tourist capital. I have served in the institution and have a working experience for nine (9) years now. I had an opportunity to study at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) in both the Higher and Advanced Certificate in Nature Conservation in the year 2015 – 2016 both sponsored by KfW Stiftung – Germany. Through the support from KfW I have managed to complete both the Higher and Advanced Certificates in Nature Conservation: Implementation and Leadership and in Trans-frontier Conservation and Management.
I feel so delighted and honoured to have been considered for career development and to build my capacity and further my education in the field of Nature Conservation. This is a rare opportunity and came at the right time when I needed knowledge and new ideas to overcome the daily challenges that I meet when executing my duties. Also, the opportunity came when our department (DNPW) was being transformed and required its employees with a certain level of qualification to be placed in key positions. I have strong feeling that the knowledge and ideas gained from the course will go a long way in my career development and will enable me to work with minimal challenges.
The opportunities that have been opened
The courses I undertook at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) has opened up many opportunities in my career and workplace in terms of being considered for upgrading into higher managerial positions, leadership and upcoming courses related to my field of work. Not only this, I had an opportunity to travel outside my home country, and meet different people from Africa, with diverse backgrounds and cultures of which at the end we made one family.
Considering the acquisition of both the Higher and Advanced Certificate in Nature Conservation, the institution carried out Appraisal and Performance Assessment System (APAS) early in January 2017 to place me in a higher middle management position in the department.
News about transfers
The institution had put up a proposal to the ministry to carry out massive transfers of its employees in an effort to streamline the operations more especially for the field officers. I felt I was one of them to move especially with the knowledge and qualities that I have acquired from the college. I am happy to report that this year 2020, I have been transferred to Mfuwe National Park to carry out these operations. I look forward to this new venture and I am greatly honoured. Once again I thank the the Southern African Wildlife College and the KFW Stiftung for the support and now my promotion.
