Programme Manager: Rural Initiatives for a Sustainable Environment (RISE)

The real joy of our work is that we have the opportunity to engage all sectors of society, because not a living soul fails to comprehend that we all depend on the environment. With this understanding many things become possible.

Sboniso Phakathi, hails from KwaZulu-Natal and has been involved in conservation for the past 13 years.

At the College he is a Projects leader in our Community Department’s Rural Initiatives for a Sustainable Environment Unit, RISE in short. The Unit’s work is in rural community- conservation initiatives, with project sites in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and in Mozambique.

His passion for the natural environment, community development and conservation is rooted in his curiosity about humans, specifically in groups as well as the environmental & developmental psychological aspects of people.

He says ”I have an interest in finding novel and creative ways in which rural communities, specifically those near conservation areas, can develop and deepen their interest in conservation or environmentalism whilst benefitting meaningfully from and contributing towards the protection and sustainability of these biologically diverse spaces…”
