Ashwell has 23 years’ experience in the conservation, education, ecotourism and environmental sectors fulfilling training, project management, advisory, strategy formulation and policy development roles. He is currently completing two honours degrees in human resource development and peace and conflict studies.
A die-hard bird watcher, he has an immense passion for environmental security, wildlife law law enforcement, people development, organisational strengthening, communities and conservation progress. As a Green Matter Fellow Alumnus and member of the Golden Key International Academic Honour Society, his focus is also on developing academic excellence and actively mentoring young graduates, rangers, guides and future leaders in conservation.
He has also served on the Executive Committee member of the National Botanical Society of South Africa and was responsible for governance, risk and HR oversight at the Society. He is on the Executive Committee of the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa. In addition, he supports collaborative and networked efforts with organisations such as the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), the Global Conservation Corp, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment. and various Universities and conservation and education stakeholders.
