The Community Development and Youth Access department implemented one Short Course and the local Youth Access Bridging Course: An Introduction to Conservation and Environmental Education during the first quarter of 2018. The Short Course programme was implemented at Rooiberg under the authority of Limpopo Wildlife Business Incubator who funded 15 students. The four day short course in Wildlife fencing took place between 16 and 19 January 2018.
The course in wildlife fencing prepares the learner to achieve competence in the following fields: Prepare an area for fencing, erect and dismantle a fence including monitoring the fence for effectiveness.

The Department also implemented the Youth Access Bridging Course: An Introduction to Conservation and Environmental Education. A total of 24 students were accepted to enroll for the the six month long programme that will end in July 2018. The Youth Access Bridging Course focuses on exposing the learner to the theory and practical application of Environmental Education and also the life of a Field Ranger in a conservation area. The interesting part of the programme is that learners undergo a contact training session at the College as well as an exposure to work place experience. During this period they are placed with host conservation organizations for post-training learner experiential learning in order to get a real understanding of an entry level career in nature conservation and environmental education.
The department is delighted to announce that the following organisations’ efforts in supporting the Youth Access Bridging Programme will go a long way towards benefiting matriculants from historically disadvantaged communities who have shown an interest in the environment and who were selected for the programme this year.
These donors include The Hans Hoheisen Charitable Trust (HHCT) – Managed by Nedbank Private Wealth, Friends of African Wildlife (FoAW), the Timbavati Foundation, Children in the Wilderness and Grounded Media.
