The hospitality department employed six interns for the year of 2020, their package included accommodation and meals on site. Four of the interns preferred to remain on campus during the lockdown. As such, the hospitality department have been catering for them and seeing that their units are cleaned and linen serviced.
Social distancing has been adhered to as only one intern has been in the kitchen for food preparation per day together with the Hospitality Manager to conduct various tasks.
To some extent it’s been business as usual in terms of administration work, filing and monthly stock taking for the two kitchens but where we have been able to provide a new support services has been in the withdrawal of groceries for some staff members on site and then ordering food for staff on site via Pick ‘n Pay. These orders are dropped off at the College’s main gate and then delivered at the staff’s respective homes. This has facilitated staff staying at home and not having to make numerous trips into nearby towns to obtain groceries and other supplies. In addition stocks have been issued stock to those interns cooking for themselves and also to essential services staff at the K9 unit.
Currently, with the new Level 4 regulations, and with some maintenance and hospitality staff able to return to work, we are ensuring that the kitchens are intensively cleaned and ready for service when we are able to resume training.
In addition, through our HR and Academic Departments, we are ensuring that we will be able to adhere to the Higher Health Guidelines for Post School Education and Training (PSET) institutions for the management of and responses to the Covid-19 outbreak. All necessary sanitary and hygiene precautions have and continue to be put in place as per the requirements outlined, together with some additional precautions the College has instituted.
