The development of tourism in South Africa because of its wide variety of natural resources across the whole country has made South Africa one of the world most sought after holiday destination. The type of tourism products offered and the influence it has on a countries GDP and relationship with the world is significant We undertake an examination of the history of tourism development to the present and include local and global factors, such as the impact of Apartheid, the Cold War, the advent of democracy, hunting safari’s, specialist tourism, photographic safari’s, the emerging role of the internet and critical global events.
