Ensuring Effective Management in Protected Areas

Purpose of Course

A learner who has achieved this qualification will understand the need for assurance that protected areas and natural resources are managed effectively. Learners will also understand the role of Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) tools, the difference between the varying types of MEE tools, the limitations of MEE tools in ensuring management effectiveness and the essential principles of a comprehensive management system that can help ensure management effectiveness.  They will also have a basic understanding of how to design and implement a Protected Area Management System (PAMS). The qualification will empower the individual to relay their knowledge to others and to be more sound and responsible regarding the choices they make towards the natural environment.

 

Course Outcomes

During this course participants will receive practical and theoretical training on how to:

  • understand the need for assurance that protected areas and natural resources  are managed effectively;
  • understand the role of  Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) tools;
  • understand the difference between the different types of MEE tools;
  • understand the limitations of MEE tools in ensuring management effectiveness;
  • understand the essential principles of a comprehensive management system that can help ensure management effectiveness; and
  • have a basic understanding of how to design and implement a Protected Area Management System (PAMS).
  • During the course participants will write a theory examination as well as undergo practical exercises.

 

Who can attend?

The Ensuring Effective Management programme is aimed at a broad target market and would be beneficial to any of the following:

  • Persons involved in the Designing & Planning of Parks and Reserves (Protected Areas)
  • People involved in the Management of Parks and Reserves
  • Park Wardens
  • Conservation Agency Management Staff
  • People involved in Monitoring and Evaluation of Parks and Reserves or Conservation Programmes

Applicants must have knowledge, comprehension and application of English.

 

Accreditation

This course is a NQF level 5 course and is institutionally accredited by the Southern African Wildlife College.

 

Course Duration

5 days. 1 day is for Field trip into KNP
